The brain uses a three-part cycle to move a task into autopilot:

  1. The Cue (Trigger): A specific time, place, or emotional state.

  2. The Routine (Action): The habit itself.

  3. The Reward: The feeling of accomplishment or relief afterward.

When this loop repeats enough times, the Basal Ganglia (the part of your brain responsible for “autopilot”) takes over from the Prefrontal Cortex (the part responsible for “willpower”).
